DR. ANDREW A. HELWIG
The author and
developer of this on-line Counselor Preparation Workshop is
Dr. Andrew A. Helwig. Dr. Helwig is a professor in the Division
of Counseling Psychology and Counselor Education at the University
of Colorado at Denver. He is completing his 14th year at CU-Denver
and has been a counselor educator for over 20 years. The Division
with which he is affiliated has over 300 master's degree students
in five emphasis areas. The community agency, school, and
marriage and family programs are accredited by the Council
for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational
Programs (CACREP). He has coordinated the community agency
program for over ten years.
There are eight
content areas on the National Counselor Exam. Over the years,
Dr. Helwig has taught five of these content areas. They are:
Helping Relationships (theories and techniques), Professional
Orientation (ethics and legal issues), Career Development,
Appraisal (tests and measurements), and Groups. The first
four listed contribute the most items to the National Counselor
Exam.
Dr. Helwig received
an MS degree in Counseling Psychology from Iowa State University
and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of
Wisconsin at Madison. He successfully completed the National
Counselor Exam and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in
Colorado, a National Certified Counselor and a National Certified
Career Counselor.
