I took the National Counselor Exam in 1989 in order to become licensed as a professional counselor in the State of Colorado. As I was preparing for the exam, it occurred to me that it would have been very helpful if someone was doing preparation workshops to help individuals such as me in reviewing and studying, especially the more difficult areas. There was no one doing such workshops -- at least in Colorado.
Even before I took the exam, I decided I would develop and offer workshops helping others in exam preparation -- if I passed the exam. I did nicely and conducted my first workshop in January 1990.
I began my workshops with handout material in the eight content areas. Later I published the first Study Guide for the National Counselor Exam. The fourth edition was published in 2000 and serves as the basis for this on-line workshop.
By mid-2002, twelve years after I began, I have conducted over 180 ‘live’ workshops. The total number of workshop participants has been over 3000 and I have conducted the workshop in 16 different states. It has been very successful. I can readily identify three sources of evidence of that success. First of all, I would not have been able to attract that number of counselors if the word of mouth was not strong and positive. Secondly, the workshop participants' responses during and after each workshop have been very gratifying. Clearly they found the workshop of value. Third, there is a feedback form at the end of the Study Guide for the National Counselor Exam and many workshop participants have sent those back to me after they have taken the exam. Their responses are overwhelmingly positive.
The on-line workshop began in 2000 and by mid-2002, over 250 counselors have completed it. Comments and reactions of some of the participants can be found in the Participants’ Reactions section.
