The 9th Edition of the Study Guide for the National Counselor Exam (NCE) and CPCE, authored by Dr. Andrew Helwig, was published in 2021. This comprehensive guide spans over 400 pages and covers the eight core areas assessed on both the NCE and CPCE. The content is also relevant to many state school counselor certification exams, and some topics overlap with the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE), which is used for national certification and licensure in select states.

Based on a national survey of practicing counselors conducted by the NBCC, future iterations of the NCE will place a greater emphasis on clinical mental health issues and practices. The survey identified six key work domains, many of which align with previously tested areas. NBCC refers to this updated framework as a new content outline.
