NCE Possible On Home Computer

It is now possible to take the National Counselor Exam at your home. And, the scheduling of the time of the exam appears fairly flexible.

Here is a recent exam-taking experience reported to me in April, 2021. This report comes from Angie who lives in Virginia. She passed the exam with a score of 121; the passing score was set at 92.

“I did not have to go a facility. It was in my home, and I was monitored the entire time. Someone did a computer call with me and had access to my computer camera…did a scan of the room and had me adjust a few things. It was very sterile and had to be the same as an in person testing environment. My face had to be in view of the camera the entire time. I wasn’t allowed to read the question out loud or talk it through out loud…. and I wasn’t allowed a scratch piece of paper…there was a note pad on line where I could type notes. That was the only downfall because I wasn’t able to draw the bell curve. I had to imagine it in my mind and try to do the spacing with the t, z, percentiles, stanines, etc. I wasn’t allowed any writing utensils on the desk either.

“I sent still photos of the room and did a wide pan of the room after I adjusted items on my desk.

“The 15-minute break was after 100 questions. I was allowed to leave the room and do whatever I needed to do….I had the opportunity to review the first 100 questions before the break….but then after the break those questions were locked down, and I was not allowed to go back and check those answers, of course. The break did not count against my allotted time. I chose to take almost the entire break.

“The online option was great because once I was approved to take the exam, I had an open window of taking the exam.  I could have taken it the next day if I chose… because proctors are hired from all over the world.  I had almost a 24-hour window some of the days from which to choose.  Weekends were hard to come by, so I did it on a Tuesday and the house was completely quiet.  Any noise heard could invalidate the test.

“Thanks for the prep work you do for us! It’s super helpful!”
