Dr. Andrew Helwig’s Study Guide for the NCE and CPCE has been revised and is now available. This 2026 9th edition of the guide has been updated with several additional, current topics including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in mental health counseling, the impact of AI on the labor market, the use of ketamine-assisted therapy, and the implementation of the Counseling Compact.
The extensive References have been updated and revisions have been made to the practice exams to reflect recent changes in counseling. The Study Guide includes the current ACA Code of Ethics which will be undergoing changes to be published later in 2026 or 2027. The Study Guide is over 400 pages and is user friendly.
The document covers the eight CACREP areas and six Work Domains and is double-spaced with room for the reader’s notes and annotations. The two practice exams are designed to replicate the 200-item National Counselor Exam and the 160-item Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam. The Study Guide is available for download or hard copy on the website: counselorprep.com.
Also available on the website is an exciting new option to experience an AI Study Assistant chatbot which instantly answers your questions about the exam, study procedures and exam study material.
